How Google Brain inspired << Clean Skin >>

I’m sure we’ve all done it. Or at least heard people say they got lost down a YouTube rabbit hole; that chance encounter with a video we never set out to watch. However, it’s not as random as some of us think. In 2015, the Google Brain team began using a type of artificial intelligence that mimics the human brain. Essentially they use one neural network which filters videos to see if they are suitable for a viewer’s “watch next” selection – and a second neural network that ranks videos by assigning a score.

So one evening, not too long ago, I had fallen down that rabbit hole (or was captured by a malevolent algorithm). I had no doubt been watching an informative video about a synthesizer (who knows which one!) and was eventually led to a decades old video instructing me about skin care. So the << Clean Skin >> seed was planted, deep in a virtual rabbit hole. It led me to think about this last 18 months or so, how at one point we were being told on a daily basis, wash your hands, keep your distance, stay home, save the NHS etc.

I thought it would be interesting to gather a few soundbites advocating self-care, personal grooming, washing and shaving tips – and set them to some music – purely as a fun distraction.

When I’ve played onstage previously the majority of the music was pre-programmed and played through Logic on a MacBook. That gave me space to bang a drum, or shout in a microphone, without having to concentrate on playing a keyboard. This set up is quite different. There are some loops and samples playing from a Korg Electribe Sampler 2 which is being manipulated in real time. I’ve also used a DSI Pro2, a Moog Grandmother and Dreadbox Erebus to play a few improvised lines, sound effects etc. If the day comes where I play onstage once more, the set up will be very much this way. I sold the MacBook!!
